The objective was to create an engaging and educational gaming experience for children that combines entertainment with education. With each level, the players are taken on a global adventure through 19 countries and 22 unique levels. The game had to stand out in the gaming market with high-quality character design and compelling narrative gameplay. Building a strong brand presence that resonates with children and parents is important for the game’s success.
Business Challenges
The major challenge was to effectively balance educational content with entertaining gameplay to hold the attention of young players in a competitive gaming landscape. Ensuring that the educational content is accurately represented and culturally sensitive for each of the 19 countries featured in the game is a significant challenge. The characters and props have to be realistic and hand-drawn and then animated. Observing particular animal traits to nail the actions of characters was another challenge for the artists. Extensive research was required to get the cultural aspects and facts of each of the 22 countries right. The gaming experience has to be smooth across all platforms. Young children lose interest quickly if the game gets boring.
Solutions Proposed
Softnotions developed an innovative action game titled Kungfu Kangaroo (KFK) that combined thrilling gameplay with educational content and helped foster cultural awareness. The game features a martial arts-skilled kangaroo on a quest to rescue penguin triplets – Cross, Dopey & Giggles from the clutches of the evil queen Serena, spanning 22 levels across 19 countries. Each country-specific level took the children through different geographical terrains and gave them a peep into landmarks, traditional attire, music, and language. The game points or coins collected were the currency of the country at that particular level. We integrated detail-oriented hand-drawn art and culturally specific elements. The solution involves creating a seamless blend of combat and platforming mechanics, allowing players to upgrade special abilities, collect power-ups, and customize skills. The game was developed with Cocos2d-x, an open-source tech for its flexibility to customize and cross-platform compatibility. Laravel helped to make the game fast and scalable.
